Paradise By Nature Lion's Mane Mushroom Capsules bottle

Lion's Mane vs. Ashwagandha: Which Fits Your Coffee Routine?

If you've started looking past your coffee mug for something to add to your morning, two names come up again and again: Lion's Mane and Ashwagandha. They often get lumped together as "adaptogens" or "nootropics," but they're very different things. One is a mushroom, the other is a root, and people tend to reach for them for different reasons and at different times of day.

Here's a plain-English comparison to help you decide which one fits your routine, or whether you want both.

The quick answer

  • Lion's Mane is a mushroom traditionally associated with focus and mental clarity.* People usually take it in the morning, often alongside their first cup of coffee.
  • Ashwagandha is a root from Ayurvedic tradition, associated with helping the body handle everyday stress.* Some people take it later in the day as part of winding down.

If your goal is a sharper start to the morning, Lion's Mane is the natural fit. If your goal is a calmer end to the day, look at Ashwagandha. Some people use one in the morning and the other at night.

What is Lion's Mane?

Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus) is a white, shaggy mushroom that grows on hardwood trees. It's been valued in Japan, China and Korea for centuries, both as food and in traditional practice. Today it's one of the most popular functional mushrooms, mostly because of its association with supporting focus, memory and mental clarity.*

What is Ashwagandha?

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a small shrub whose root has been a cornerstone of Ayurveda, India's traditional system of wellness, for thousands of years. Its Sanskrit name loosely translates to "smell of the horse," a nod to the root's earthy scent. Today it's best known for helping the body handle everyday stress and supporting a calm, balanced mood.*

When to take each one

Lion's Mane in the morning. It pairs naturally with coffee. Take your two capsules with breakfast and your first cup, and it becomes part of a habit you already have. Taking supplements at the same time every day is the easiest way not to forget them.

Ashwagandha later in the day. Some people take their one capsule with dinner. Taking it with food is a common habit and can be easier on the stomach. It can be taken in the morning too; the main thing is picking a time you'll stick to.

Can you take both?

Yes, some people do: Lion's Mane in the morning, Ashwagandha in the evening. They're different ingredients used for different reasons, so they sit side by side in a daily routine rather than doing the same job twice.

As with any supplement, check with your doctor before starting if you're pregnant or nursing, taking medication or managing a health condition. That's especially worth doing with Ashwagandha.

Where coffee comes in

If you'd rather not add another bottle to the counter, our Mushroom Coffee with Lion's Mane & Chaga builds Lion's Mane into the cup: 90% Arabica, 5% Lion's Mane and 5% Chaga. Use 1 tablespoon (10 g) per 6–8 oz of water, and a 12 oz bag makes about 34 cups. It's a smooth, chocolatey medium roast that tastes like coffee.

Want both? The coffee plus Lion's Mane capsules is our Morning Focus Kit.
